Sleep when the baby sleeps
The advice all new parents receive
Unless of course you own a cat
Who reminds you, he too has needs
Your service may be required
In the day or in the night
He’s not picky when
After all, he can’t tell time
Yet somehow it seems
He is the most persistent
Whenever the baby is sleeping
He needs you that instant
It may be loud meows
To alert you his food is half empty
Or perhaps he’s trapped again
In a room where he shouldn’t be
He didn’t much appreciate
The dog daring to show his face
A kitty slap should remind
The canine peasant of his place
He may attempt to finally off
Your house plant that’s barely alive
Putting it out of its misery
A favor really, to be eaten by a feline
The milk the toddler was drinking
Well, his majesty, the cat needs it more
He’ll let you know when he’s finished
You’ll find the cup on the floor
He may need to expel
A sudden bolt of energy
That regal kingly persona, absent
In its place, the maniac you know him to be
And after all of this, if you’re still not awake
His most effective tactic to utilize
A horrible, foreboding sound
All cat companions (we don’t dare call ourselves their owners) recognize
You’ll bolt straight from your spot
At the over exaggerated hacking
Trying to ensure your couch won’t catch
The furball his royal pain is gagging
By this time, the baby is awake again
Your opportunity missed
You won’t be getting that nap
But now, the cat will be taking his
