Sleep when the Baby Sleeps… Unless you have a cat

Sleep when the baby sleeps

The advice all new parents receive

Unless of course you own a cat

Who reminds you, he too has needs

Your service may be required

In the day or in the night

He’s not picky when

After all, he can’t tell time

Yet somehow it seems

He is the most persistent

Whenever the baby is sleeping

He needs you that instant

It may be loud meows

To alert you his food is half empty

Or perhaps he’s trapped again

In a room where he shouldn’t be

He didn’t much appreciate

The dog daring to show his face

A kitty slap should remind

The canine peasant of his place

He may attempt to finally off

Your house plant that’s barely alive

Putting it out of its misery

A favor really, to be eaten by a feline

The milk the toddler was drinking

Well, his majesty, the cat needs it more

He’ll let you know when he’s finished

You’ll find the cup on the floor

He may need to expel

A sudden bolt of energy

That regal kingly persona, absent

In its place, the maniac you know him to be

And after all of this, if you’re still not awake

His most effective tactic to utilize

A horrible, foreboding sound

All cat companions (we don’t dare call ourselves their owners) recognize

You’ll bolt straight from your spot

At the over exaggerated hacking

Trying to ensure your couch won’t catch

The furball his royal pain is gagging

By this time, the baby is awake again

Your opportunity missed

You won’t be getting that nap

But now, the cat will be taking his

My cat, Bear
Post fondly dedicated to this miscreant creature of mine
