I Can Do It Reward Charts – Teaching Preschool Responsibility
In our home, we’ve noticed it’s time for more responsibility for our preschooler. He has started to express interest in completing tasks on his own. We have also felt that there are some things he could be doing independently. He is heavily motivated with stickers and rewards, so a responsibility chart was perfect for him.
You can buy or freely download some really great responsibility charts if you’d like to put the effort into looking them up. I enjoy creating my own, so that’s what I did. I’ve shared it below if you’d like to download and use it yourself. You can keep my icons for each task that have specific meaning in our house or download a blank one and write in your own tasks. You could also upload it into Canva and add your own icons.
My child does best with remembering to complete these tasks when the rewards are immediate, so some of the tasks can get more than one sticker each day (like brushing his teeth). These charts can either be printed weekly if you’ve got the printer ink to spare or can be placed in a magnetic cover (linked below) and marked on with dry erase markers or reusable stickers (linked below).
This chart is not meant to be “punishing,” only positively reinforcing responsibility. We start fresh every week and celebrate with a “reward” at the end of the week if the chart is full. If the chart isn’t full, he still has the satisfaction of each added sticker, but we don’t do the overall weekly reward. Rewards can be anything motivating to your child: a small toy bought at the store, an ice cream or sweet treat, seasonal items or activities, or really anything that seems “extra” to them. Nothing extravagant, but exciting and effectively rewarding.
Please let me know if there’s anything you would add or amend to the responsibility charts!
